I feel these paintings, though technically impressive, leave little room for the viewer's imagination to participate. I wanted to simplify objects as much as possible while still making them recognizable, with an emphasis on color. There is an effort to flatten and skew things so that nothing appears quite right when looked at closely. Shadows in the wrong shape; planes that don't make sense. I feel this allows the viewer to have their own vision of the details, making the painting have a freshness over time. I am most pleased when I see people smile at my work." |
